Exin Castillos brick system pieces list
This brick system is originari from EXIN, a toy manufacturer of Barcelona (Spain).
It made this block system in 1968.
Pieces system manufacturers and replicas
Exin (1951 - 1993, Barcelona) manufacture this pieces since 1968.
Popular de Juguetes (1996, Manises) reedit this game under Exin license since 1999 (fifteen years later).
Maxim Castillos by Juguetes Falomir make a replica until 2002. Discontinued by law order.
CEFA Make a similar pieces by not 100% compatibles. There are a little bit small pieces. But is possible combine it to Exin Castillos constructions.
NG Castillos manufacture actually a discrete number of principal pieces of classical Exin castillos. And create also new design pieces.
All the pieces of NG are 100% compatibles, and the quality material and color are excellent.
Geometry
The bricks have 25x12.5mm minus the clearance so that the pieces can fit together.
It define a cube with the same length, width, and height (or depth): 12,5 mm.
Nomenclature
Dimensions
As the system was designed to create walls, the default depth of the bricks is 1 cube, so their name is defined by their length in studs and their height, if they occupy more than one row.
In the plates, width a fixed height of a half cube: 6.26mm, the dimension include length and depth.
The 'D' value
The prefix D is used to define studs diameter in circular elements.
And D is used too in regular polygons to indicate the inscription square base in studs: 2 × apothem.
Geometry vertex fit in poligonal bricks (not fitted into the grid)
In non square corner pieces, that not respect the grid, the edge of the pieces border is possible in 3 vertex positions:
Octogonal geometry D
Respecting the fit to square reticula in octogonal geometry.
The octogonal geometry over the grid:
And in the even diameters:
In the even and odd diameter the 90º studs are placed in the grid. The 45º studs are placed symmetrically to 90ª studs.
Circular pieces cuts
The original cut of circular pieces:
And an alternative 2x1 brick aspect is possible:
The alternative brick 2x1 pieces cut allow the possibility of make variable radius walls, like an ellipsis.
Studs Position in circular pieces
On the circular Exin Castillos pieces, the studs are arranged in a 90° cross so they can be fitted into the square geometry.
When there is space (depending on the diameter), a stud is included at a half angle, 45° on D5 and 22.5° on D7.
On D11 ("Mega Almena") by NG Castillos, the 90° studs are retained,
and they include all the possible studs that fit (28), but the 45° angles, which would only allow 24 possible studs, are lost.
In yellow the studs respecting the 45º convention. In blue the other possibility of studs placement, over the NG Castillos distribution (that no respect the 45º possibility).
In the circular geometry pieces is important the diameter and also the total number of studs included in the circumference.
| Diameter studs | Perimeter studs | Piece cutting |
|---|---|---|
| D3 Exin | 4 | 1 piece |
| D5 Exin | 8 | 2*(3+1) |
| D7 "Gran Almena" Exin, NG | 16 |
Exin 2*(5+3)
NG  4*(3+1) |
| D9 | 16 | |
| D11 | 24 | 4*(4+2) |
| D11 "Mega Almena" NG | 28 | 7*(3+1) |
| D13 | 32 | |
| D15 | 32 | |
| D17 | 48 | 4*(7+5) |
| D19 | 56 | 4*(8+6) or 8*(4+3) |
In the table: In red the non 45º geometry studs.
Exin Castillos brick system pieces list
Pieces list divided by categories.
Square geometry is the standard, but Exin Castillos include a circular geometry pieces, and modern 3D makers have octogonal geometry pieces.
Mixed geometry pieces is the category for piece families or types that include various geometries.
For pieces combining square and other geometry, include it in the other geometry category.
